  1. I think the social issue in Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine is loss and being different. Caitilin has just lost her brother from a shooting at his school. She does not want to understand that he is gone. She wants him with her. I think being different is a social issue because she has Aspergers and can't tell how people are feeling. Like for example she could not tell how her dad was felling about her brother passing away at first but then later on she realized he was hurting. It's also hard for her to make friends. For example she tells Rachel a student in her class that her face looks bad. She said this because she wanted to tell her the truth but ended up hurting her feelings when she was trying to make a friend. This is why I think loss and being different are the social issues.

Mockingbird and Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park have the same social issues. In Mick Harte Was Here Phoebe lost her brother in a car accident and its hard for her. In Mockingbird Caitiln lost her brother too. They both go into their brother's room and just sit and remember them. They both do something to remember their brothers. Phoebe writes Mick Harte Was Here in the cement and Caitiln finishes the chest her brother started.

    1. Wow Michelle! I never thought about how similar Mick Harte's sister Phoebe and CaItlin from Mockingbird are. They both experience the tragic and unexpected death of their brothers. They are both going through the process of dealing with loss. It is hard for Phoebe because she regrets her last words to her brother and Caitlin's Asbergers makes it so hard for her to deal with her feelings. They are both sad stories but also very touching books.

    2. I totally agree that the social issue is loss. I just forgot about how Caitlin said to Rachel that her face looks bad. But Rachel said to be honest so she did. I thought also that Mick Harte Was Here and Mockingbird are definitely alike. Both stories have brothers that died and tell how their sister's deal with the death and loss.

  2. Question #1

I read the book Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine and I think the social issue is loss and disability. The reason I think loss is a social issue because of how Caitlin loss her brother by the shooting at the school. Also the reason I chose disability is because Caitlin couldn't understand how the kids at school were feeling about the shooting and other things because Caitlin has Asperger's Syndrome. Asperger's Syndrome is a mental disease that makes you feel unsure of people's feelings. It was hard for Caitlin to take in that her brother died. On her birthday she kept saying, "I want to go to the mall with Devon." She also couldn't recognized that other people felt the same way as her, like Micheal. He feels that way because his mom died in the shooting also.

    Question #2

I think the book Mockingbird is like the book Mick Harte Was Here by Barabar Park because the two girls both loss their brothers. Also Caitlin's dad in Mockingbird wasn't really as active in her life after Devon died because he was depressed. Ed, Mick Harte's father acted the same way to Phoebe ( Mick's sister ) when he died. Later on in the books both of the fathers realized because of the two daughters were trying hard to bring their family back together. So the fathers realized they had to go on in their life. In MIck Harte Was Here Phoebe ( the sister ) only had one friend Zoe and Caitlin had only had one friend too, Micheal. I think it's hard to have just one friend because she can't always be interacting with one person. What if he was absent she wouldn't have anyone so it's important to have more than one friend.

I have to say that Micheal isn't in her class she only sees him at recess and she tried to make friend but everyone was mean to her. They were mean because she is different.
