Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine
Question #1 What are the main social issues dealt with in your book? Give at least two examples from the story that illustrates this social issue.
Question #2 Compare the social issue in your book to another book you've read or we've read as a class. Describe the book and explain how the social issues are similiar.
QUESTION #1 A social issue from "Mockingbird" by Kathryn Erskine is death. The main character Caitlin has both her mother and older brother dead. Caitlin's mother died of cancer when Caitlin was three, and her older brother Devon was shot in a school shooting. Devon helped Caitlin understand people and have good people skills. The reason Caitlin doesn't have many people skills is because she has Aspergers Syndrome. Without Devon helping her along the way now, Caitlin is having a tough time.
ReplyDeleteQUESTION #2 In "Mockingbird" , Caitlin's older brother passed away. Her father was too overwhelmed with grief to try and comfort Caitlin, and so she had to get over Devon by herself. In "A Summer to Die" by Lois Lowry, the main character Meg's sister died. All the doctors tried to save Meg's sister but couldn't. It was really hard for both of Meg and Caitlin to get over their family member's death.
I also think that in Because of Mr. Terupt, Jeffery struggled with the death of his brother in the same way that Caitlin does. He stops speaking and feels enormous guilt because he wasn't able to save him as his parents had hoped.
DeleteI know someone with Aspergers Syndrome, and I know how hard it can be for someone who has Aspergers Syndrome to deal with a tragedy. Devon must have always been there for her, and now he's taken away! It must be so hard for her to do anything without him.
DeleteIn Glimpse by Carol Lynch Williams, I think Hope (the main character) and all of her family kind of broke apart because of a death. Hope's father died in a motorcycle crash. Like Caitlin, this affected them, but mostly Liz (Hope's older sister). After the crash, Liz and her mother's relationship tore, and some bad things happened. leading to a near death experience... Liz tried to commit suicide. :(
DeleteI actually know someone with Asperger's syndrome and they have trouble doing regular, daily things like paying attention when someone is talking. I cant' Imagine how hard it was for Caitlin to have aspergers then you're brother dying. It must have been such a struggle.
DeleteI have read Mockingbird and i think that your summary is really good and describes everything that happened!
DeleteI have read Mockingbird and I know how hard it is to loose someone so close.
DeleteQuestion #1: The main social issue in "Mockingbird" by Kathrine Erksire is death. The main character Caitlin only has her dad because her mom died from Cancer and her brother Devon died in a school shooting. Caitlin's mom died when Caitlin was three so she isn't very upset but her dad and her are extremely sad because the school shooting was recent.
ReplyDeleteQuestion #2: Death- Mockingbird and The invention of Hugo Cabret
Mockingbird- Caitlin's mom died when Caitlin was three and then Caitlin's brother Devon died in a school shooting. Caitlin only has her dad now and they are both very sad.
The invention of Hugo Cabret- Hugo's dad died in a fire, then Hugo had to live with his uncle in a train station. After awhile Hugo's uncle abandoned him and Hugo had to run the clocks for the train station because that was his uncle's job and there wasn't another way for him to get money for himself.
Hugo and Caitlin are similar because they both had a death in their family.
Question#1 One of the main social issues is depression. It's a issue because Caitlin's brother Devon dies in a school shooting and Caitlin and her dad are depressed about his death. They are also depressed because of the death of Caitlin's mother who died of cancer when Caitlin was very young. Having another family member die is just adding onto the weight they both hold now that he's gone. Caitlin's dad shows his depression by crying in the shower because of Devon. Caitlin shows her depression by going over to Devon's chest and just staring at it until one day she has the idea to finish it.
ReplyDeleteQuestion #2 In Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine the main character Caitlin is depressed because her brother Devon died in a school shooting and she's depressed. She shows it by staring at the chest and being very sad that she doesn't have anyone to help her understand her feelings. In Because of Mr.Terupt by Rob Buyea one of the main characters Peter is depressed because he hit Mr.Terupt with a snowball and he is really depressed. Peter shows his depression by not talking to anyone and just being very quiet. Caitlin and Peter are similar because they are both dealing with a difficult life event.

ReplyDeleteQUESTION#1
ReplyDeleteOne of the social issues in Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine is that Caitlnwas persistent by asking her dad to work on Devon's Eagle Scout projrpeck chest with her. Caitlin is like Nory Ryan from Nory Ryan's Song, because bushed through.
Another social issue is Death because Devon died and Caitlin's dad was crushed when he died and couldent get over the fact that Devon was gone.
Another social issue is disabilities because Caitlin has her Aspergers Syndrome. She all ready has her own problems to deal with. On top of her having Aspergers Syndrome she has to deal with Devon's death.
QUESTION#2
In Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine one of the main characters, Caitlin's dad is sad, lonely and depressed. He acts this way because hi only son Devon died in a school shooting. When Devon died, Caitlin wanted to find closure so do do that she asked and asked and asked her dad if both of them could finish Devon's Eagle Scout Project Chest. I can relate Caitlin's dad t Jeffery's mom in Because of Mr.Turput because after Devon's death, he stayed home and was all sad and depressed about Devon. Jeffery's mom acted the same way after micheal died. Jeffery's mom never went back to work, never got out of bed and stayed only in pajamas and never real clothes.
Caitlin was persistent when she asked hr dad to finish Devon's Unfinished Eagle Scout project chest. Caitlin never gave up. She wanted to reach her goal of finding closure and finshing Devon chest. Even though she has Aspergers Syndrome, that never stopped her from reaching her goals in life.
I can relate Caitlin to Nory Ryan from Nory Ryan's Song because something both of them didn't let something hold them back. Nory Ryan's neighbors, the Neils, lost their house by not being able to pay rent. Nory Ryan tried to help them by going to Anna Donnelly's house by getting the coin from her. Both Nory and Caitlin tried and let nothing hold them back for reaching their goals in life.
