Patricia Reilly Giff
We've read two great books by Patricia Reilly Giff, Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home. How are the books similar? How are the main characters similar? How are they different?
Post a comment using specific details from the text to support your thinking.
I think that Nory and Mariel are very different characters. Nory is a strong and brave character who has to deal with many hardships but she never gives up. At the start of the book, Mariel is very insecure about herself because of her legs. She doesn't even play baseball with Geraldine Ginty and Frankie McHugh because she is too afraid. As the story progresses and she becomes friends with Brick she becomes braver.
ReplyDeleteIn class we read Nory Ryan’s Song and All The Way Home by Patricia Reilly Giff. I think Nory and Mariel were very different at first but then they became alike. They were different at first because Nory was brave and strong hearted. And Mariel was very passive. An example of that was when Mariel was at the picnic she didn’t even say hi and gave no one a chance. Near the end characters are alike because Mariel gives Brick a try and helps him get to Windy Hill. That shows bravery because Windy Hill is 200 Miles away. Nory shows bravery because she climbed a cliff to get bird eggs for food. Two items are alike in the books because the package from Maggie was important to Nory and Mariel’s two dollar bill was very special to her. Another thing is that Nory’s mother died giving birth to Patch and Mariel’s mother died from polio so both of their mother’s died.
ReplyDeleteIn Just Juice and in All The Way Home Mariel and Juice are similar because they are brave and hard workers. Mariel helps Brick to go back to Windy Hill so Brick could help Claude with the orchard. Juice is like Mariel because Juice is brave and a hard worker. Juice has to only go to school but, also has to help her mom and her dad out. Juice is brave because she has to help her mom out by helping her give birth to her baby sister because they are poor and don't have enough money to go to the hospital.
DeleteThe books Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home are smiled because the author has so many descriptive lines. For example " green lace curtains with sun shining through." was in the book All the Way Home. It makes you feel that you are right there in the book. The characters in both books are similar because Nory is brave but as the book All the Way Home goes on Mariel gets brave too. Nory was brave to climb the cliffs and tried to get the birds eggs. Mariel was brave for getting the apple book back for Brick.
ReplyDeleteOne of the comparisons I can make between Nory Ryan's song and All the way home is Nory climbed the cliffs for food and Mariel climbed the apple trees to help Claude and Brick harvest Claude's apples. Both of those things show lots of bravery. Brick wanted and got back to Windy Hill to help Claude harvest the apples and Nory wants to get to Windy Hill to see Maggie. Both Nory's and Brick's moms have passed away. Mariel's mom passed away one night from polio during a harvest in Windy Hill. Nory's mom passed away giving birth to Patch. Nory's potatoes got destroyed during the famine which made her dad go to sea to catch fishes. Brick's apples got destroyed which made him go to Brooklyn. So both of their foods got destroyed and caused somebody to go somewhere.
ReplyDeleteIn class we read Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home.I think Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home are similar .When Nory had to climb to get the bird eggs , she was nervous about doing it.In All The Way Home Mariel was nervous about going to Windy Hill with Brick.Another example is how they both don't have their mother's passed away.I think Julia and Anna have the same personality because Julia is taking care of Mariel . Anna took care of Nory .I also think the two dollar bill and the package are really important symbols to both Mariel and Nory .That's why I think the two books are so alike!
ReplyDeleteI think Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home by Patricia Reilly Giff are a lot alike. Both of her books have a item that is important to the charters. The two dollar bill was important to Mariel. It was important because it was the money that represents Mariel being able to walk. Also because Loretta gave it to her. Then Mariel spent it on her way to Windy Hill. The package was important to Nory and and she lost it when she was pushed down to the ground and a man took it. The package was important to Nory because Maggie her sister sent it all the way to Ireland. Both Mariel and Nory lost something important to them. Another similarity is that in both the stories take place in Brooklyn for a part in the story.
ReplyDeleteNory is brave, strong, confident and has been through a lot of hardships. Mariel was quiet shy and far from confident. Then when Brick came she became confident about herself. She had made a new friend that didn't care that she had polio he liked her for her. So Nory was always strong, confident and brave but it took Mariel longer to realize she could be all those things.
My class read "Nory Ryan's Song" and also "All the Way Home" both by Patricia Reilly Giff, and also both with similar outcomes.I believe Nory and Brick two of the main characters are very similar .Brick tries to help Claude instead of himself.Nory sent Patch to Brooklyn instead of herself.Thats on of the many reasons I think Brick and Nory are unselfish .They both help the ones they love.Nory and Brick are different though, because Brick left one person he loved to help another,Nory helped one person so she could help another. There are many more similar ideas in these great books by Patricia Reilly Giff.
ReplyDeleteIn class we read Nory Ryan's song and All the Way Home.I think that Mariel and Nory are alike in some parts of the book.In the end Mariel becomes a lot like Nory because she uses her two-dollar bill to get Brick to Windy Hill but she didn't tell Loretta.Loretta was freaked out and didn't know where Mariel was.Nory was brave because after she heard Anna tell her that there are eggs in a dangerous place and now after Nory heard that story Nory needed food so she went down and got the eggs off the cliff.Anna's brother did the same thing but he died and Nory survived.Another comparison is that in Nory Ryan's Song the package was important because it was from Maggie and Maggie went to Brooklyn and food can be in the package for them.In All the Way Home the baseball was important to Mariel because Mariel's favorite team is the Dodgers and and the baseball was from theDodgers that she caught.Another connection is that Maggie went to went to Brooklyn and Mariel is in Brooklyn and Ebbets field is in Brooklyn where Mariel caught the ball.
ReplyDeleteIn school we read Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home by Patricia Reilly Giff.I think Nory and Mariel are similar. For example they both have a main goal to get somewhere. Nory wants to get to Brooklyn to see Maggie.Mariel wants to get to Windy Hill to find out what happens to her mother.I think they are both brave.I think Nory is brave because she climbed the cliff to get the bird eggs.I think Mariel is brave because she climbed the ladder when she had the effects from Polio.I think Nory and Mariel are different too.I think they are different because Nory was brave in the start and Mariel was not.
ReplyDeleteIn class we read Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home, both by Patricia Reilly Giff. Two characters stood out to me, Nory and Mariel. They stood out to me because they became strong characters through out the story. I think that Nory and Mariel are both very unique and different in their own ways, but they are similar. Nory, is a tough character who is battling the Irish Potato Famine and trying to keep her family alive. Nory shows bravery when she went down the cliff to gather sea bird eggs for food and she got hurt doing it. Mariel, is at first a shy girl who is insecure about her legs. Mariel his her legs at Mrs. Warnicki's 6th Grade picnic behind the table cloth. But, as the story continues Mariel becomes brave and courageous. She shows bravery and courage when she climbed the ladder to pick apples and she has polio which makes it more difficult and dangerous for her but, she still did it.
ReplyDeleteI think a theme in both Nory Ryan's Song and All The Way Home is bravery. In Nory Ryan's song Nory climbed the cliffs for food bird eggs. In All The Way Home Joesph says to mariel she "can't pick the apples with those legs". But Mariel got all of the apples off the apple tree. Both character's are similiar because Nory and Mariel's mother both died. Both Nory and Mariel longed to be with their moms. Nory had a special bond with Anna and Mariel had a special bond with Loretta.
ReplyDeleteIn class, we read Nory Ryan's song, and, All the way home. These are some differences between the 2 characters:
ReplyDeleteI think that Mariel is insecure, scared, and doesn't want to go into the world, because she is afraid of people making fun of her legs. Nory, however, is different. She wants to stay behind and let her family go to Brooklyn, and see Maggie. She just won't take no for an answer.Mariel and Nory are alike, but here's the thing:Mariel had her mom die of Polio. Nory, had her mom die when giving birth to Patch. It must be painful to have your Mom die.
Nory Ryan and Mary Eliott also have another thing in common.... They are both overcoming fears. They are from different places, but yet when Mary ( Mariel ) is in Brooklyn, she goes to Windy Hill. When Nory is in Ireland, she goes to Brooklyn.
Weird fact: Both are in Brooklyn, or moving to be there! Brooklyn must be a common place!
In class we read Nory Ryan's song and All the way Home by Patricia Reilly Giff. I think Mariel and Nory are similar because both girls lost their mothers. Nory is braver then Mariel in the beginning. Nory has to find food for Anna and her brother Patch. She climbs high cliffs to get eggs for them. Near the end of the book Mariel becomes braver. Mariel leaves Loretta to find Brick and help him get to Windy Hill which is far away from Brooklyn. Mariel and Nory are different because Mariel is shy and she was too shy to play baseball with Geraldine Ginty and Frankie McHugh. Nory is not shy because she did something's that could have gotten her in trouble or get her hurt like when she helped poach the fish from Lord Cunningham's pond.
ReplyDeleteI think Nory and Mariel are similar because both of their mothers died. Nory's mother died while having Patch. Mariel's mother died of polio. Joesph ,an old apple picker, tells Mariel that her mother died of polio and Nory watched her mother die.
ReplyDeleteI think Nory and Mariel are similar because in Nory Ryan's Song Nory's mom died and Nory didn't really have a long life with her mom. Mariel's mom died in All The Way Home from polio and Mariel never knew her at all or even remembered what her face looks like. Nory's mother died from giving birth to Nory's little brother Patch. Mariel and Nory Ryan are also different because in Nory Ryan's Song Nory was on her own and had to take care of herself and Anna and also her younger brother Patch. Mariel has Loretta who takes care of her and loves her and Mariel never had to go on alone in life like Nory had to.
ReplyDeleteOur class read Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home By Patricia Reilly Giff. In Nory Ryan's Song Nory was a very strong and brave character. She did whatever she had to do to help her family survive the potato famine. She hid from Lord Cunningham and climbed the steep cliffs to get food for her family. In All the Way Home Mariel was not a very strong character at first. She hid her legs and shied away from people. It wasn't until she met Brick that she showed her strength and courage. She gave up her $2.00 bill to get the tickets to go to Windy Hill. Mariel went with Brick to go to Windy Hill.
ReplyDeletein class we read All The Way home and Nory Ryan's Song by Patricia Reilly Gift. I think that Nory and and Brick are very much a like. Nory is separated from her family when they go to America. Brick is separated from his family when Brick goes to Brooklyn. Also both characters are reunited with their family. that is something that is similar about Nory Ryan's Song and All The Way Home. Another thing that is similar about Nory Ryan's Song and All The Way Home was the similarity between Mariel and Sean Red. Both of them stepped up when they needed to. Sean Red volunteered to work on the road for extra money. Mariel used her two dollar bill to get Brick to Windy Hill he never would have made it! In Nory Ryan's Song Maggie sent her package from Brooklyn . All The Way Home was based in Brooklyn.
ReplyDeleteIn our class we read 2 books by the same author, Patricia Reilly Giff. The 2 books are Nory Ryan's Song and All The Way Home. I think Mariel and Nory are alike because at first Mariel wouldn't even talk to Brick because she wanted him to go away. But when Mariel caught the ball things changed and they became friends. Nory was afraid of Anna because she looked like a witch. But after Nory started to work for Anna to pay off the coin things started to change and Nory considered Anna as family. Another reason they're the same is the coin in Nory Ryan's Song is similar to the 2$ bet money in All The Way Home. They each used this to try to help another person. But the most important connection is something happened to their moms and they both died.
ReplyDeleteSome reasons that they're different is the setting has a hundred year difference between them. Also Nory is brave and Mariel is sort of shy but later in the book she gets braver. The last one is Nory lives in Ireland for the whole book and Nory lives in Brooklyn Ny.
In class we read just juice and all the way home.Kids were making fun of juice in the book Just Juice. juice had a tough life because Juice had a hard time in her family because they did not have any money. They were close to being kicked out of their house. The character Mariel in all the way home had a tough life also. She had a tough life because she had polio and had lasting effects. They both were made fun of. Juice was made fun of because she could not read, Mariel got made fun of because she had braces and couldn't play sports.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mariel and Nory are similar and different. Nory is brave because when Nory needed the coin to save Cats life, she had the guts to go to Anna's and get the coin. But Mariel starts out doubtful and shy. When Geraldine and Frankie are playing baseball, Mariel doubts herself because she fears to be embarrassed, by the kids saying "you can't play baseball!" They would just make fun of her. Another thing is that Mariel was brave enough to find Brick, go to Windy Hill, and try to find her mom. Nory was brave enough to climb down the cliff and get the birds' eggs, climb back up and give the eggs' to her family and friends. Another different thing about Nory and Mariel is that Nory has siblings, Mariel doesn't. Another similar thing about Nory and Mariel is that they never gave up hope, it's as if hope is in their soul. In the middle of All the Way Home, Mariel doesn't give up about finding her mom and bringing Brick home. Also in Nory Ryan's Song, Nory doesn't give up on trying to pay the bill for her house. Like I said, they both never give up hope.
ReplyDeleteIn school we read Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home by Patricia Reilly Giff. I think that Brick and Nory are two very similar characters. Nory is strong and selfless, Brick also has those characteristics. Brick and Nory are also in two similar situations. They both have some pretty normal lives, but disaster strikes. Brick's family's orchard burns down and Nory's potatoes get blight and they can't eat them. Brick has no choice but to leave from his home and Nory has no choice but to stay. Nory was brave by grabbing eggs off the cliff. Nory was selfless because she got the coin from Anna and tried to give it to Cat Neely. Brick was brave because he was ready to march 200 miles to his orchard. I enjoyed both Nory Ryan's Song and All the Way Home. They were similar because she described their surroundings and used really descriptive language in both stories.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Gigante is awesome!
